Richard D. Bird
Born: September 2, 1934
On June 18, 1969, Officer Bird was involved
in an accident while pursuing a speeding car near 85th and Troost. Due to the
severe brain injuries, he died on July 4, 1969.

John E. Dacy
Born: May 15, 1938
On July 21, 1969, Officer Dacy was shot
twice and killed during an attempted armed robbery at 3933 Main.

James W. Glenn
Born: November 24, 1933
On January 10, 1969, Officer James W.
Glenn was practicing manuevers with the department helicopter, when it
malfunctioned (the tail rotor failed and fuselage began to spin as it crashed.)
The crash occurred at the Kansas City Timing Association drag strip near Front
Street and Manchester, southeast of the Chouteau Bridge. Officer Glenn
joined the police force July 16, 1960, and graduated from the police academy
November 1960.

Robert W. Evans
Born: February 6, 1939
On October 14, 1971, Officer Evans and
other officers were working traffic enforcement on 24 Highway. Officer Evans
stopped Thomas Palmer in the outside lane near 7200 E. 24 Highway. and parked
his motorcycle behind Palmer's car. Officer Evans and Palmer were standing
between the motorcycle and the rear of the car when a car driven by Leroy H.
Morris struck the motorcycle, the two men, and Palmer's car. Both of Palmer's
legs were broken by the impact. Officer Evans was thrown 70 feet, over Palmer's
car, and died from his injuries at the scene.

John J. O'Sullivan
Born: April 12, 1944
On December 12, 1978, Officer Sullivan
was sitting in his patrol car at 68th and Myrtle at approximately 10am, filling
out a report, when a man pulled up along side him and shot him. A telephone
company workman was nearby, witnessed the incident, and radioed for help. Later,
Lawrence Thomas was arrested as the killer and it was learned that O'Sullivan
had testified against him in a drug trial in November, and had answered
disturbance calls at his house twice in the week before the shooting.
Officer O'Sullivan was born in Ireland, and became a United States citizen in
1971 - the same year he joined the police force.
