Willard C. Bayne

Born: November 8, 1879

On February 11, 1921, Officer Bayne was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect at 15th and Poplar.

Carl J. Bickett


On July 19, 1921, Officer Carl J. Bickett, in plainclothes, was attempting a raid on a room in the Arcadia hotel at 322 W. 12th Street, when the man he was questioning ran. Bickett chased the man into an alley between Central Street and Broadway, where a gunfight occurred. The assailant escaped, and Bickett was fatally wounded. Bickett was discovered lying in front of the La Casa Hotel (325 West 11th Street), his gun in his right hand and his police star in his left.
Officer Bickett joined the police department in 1915.


Wright D. Bryant

Born: November 20, 1893

On December 1, 1923, Officer Bryant observed a man attempting to rob a filling station at Admiral and Paseo. As Officer Bryant tried to capture the suspect, the sucpect turned and shot the officer, severely wounding him. The other officers with Officer bryant gave chase to the suspect and fired numerous times at him. When they finally caught up to him , they found that he had eight gunshot wounds and had died of the wounds. Officer Bryant died December 3, 1923, from his wounds.

Thomas J. Wilson

On December 19, 1923, as Officer Wilson stepped from the corner of 41st and Troost, he was struck by a car. The car was driven by his friend, Louis Becker, a business man the City Market area. The first call to come into the Woodland station advising of the accident was taken by Betty Bickett, Officer Wilson's daughter. She ordered a ambulance for her father and then passed out. Officer Wilson died as a result of a broken neck. ( It should be noted that Officer Wilson was the father-in-law of Carl Bickett, another officer killed in the line of duty in 1921.)

William C. Zinn

On February 13, 1923 Officer William C. Zinn was fatally wounded when he attempted to arrest James H. Warner, who had been in the act of holding up the Van Pelt drug store at 3401 E. 12th Street.
