Oliver P. Carpenter

Born: November 5, 1876

On February 8, 1932, Detective Carpenter and his partner interrupted an armed robbery of the Mercantile Trust Company at 14th and Grand. During the course of this incident, Detective Carpenter and a janitor were shot several times with a machine gun. The two suspects were able to escape. Detective Carpenter and the employee both died of their wounds.

Morris Bigus

Born: August 9, 1896

On July 29, 1933, Sergeant Bigus and Officer H.K. Klapmeyer responded to a robbery call at the Kansas City Gas Company, 4714 Broadway. Just after the officers arrived, the suspect snuck into the Walgreen store at 47th and Broadway. Sergeant Bigus entered the store a short time later and ordered the suspect to put his hands up. The suspect drew a gun and he and Sergeant Bigus struggled inside the store. The suspect twisted Sergeant Bigus' arm (which had just recently healed from being broken in four places) until Sergeant Bigus' weapon discharged into his own body. Although wounded himself, Sergeant Bigus was able to regain control of his weapon and shoot the suspect. The suspect was killed by the shot. Sergeant Bigus was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where he died a short time later.


William J. Grooms

Born: January 19, 1904

On June 17, 1933, Detective Grooms and Detective Hermanson were dispatched to escort Frank Nash, of the infamous Barker Gang, back to Kansas City for his transfer to the prison in Leavenworth, Kansas. Unknown to the detectives, an informant had relayed all the information regarding the arrival of Nash and his law enforcement escorts to various gangsters through out the metropolitan area. The officers were not prepared for the ambush at the Union Station in Kansas City. As a result, both Detectives, a F.B.I. agent, a chief of police from Oklahoma, and Nash were all killed by the mobsters, one of whom was "Pretty Boy Floyd

Frank E. Hermanson

Born: November 8, 1887

Leroy VanMeter

Born: May 30, 1898

On January 23, 1933, Officer VanMeter was shot and killed at the Nunn Bush Shoe Store at 10th and Walnut.
