E. C. Barnes

On April 7, 1924, Officers Emmet Barnes, J.K. Etzold, and T.L. Monroe were at a dry goods store at 6002 East Fifteenth Street, attempting to catch a robber who was hiding inside the building. Officer Barnes was covering the front door, and Etzold and Monroe the back entrance. Etzold and Monroe (who believed the robber was about to come out their exit) heard shots coming from the front of the building. They rushed to the front and found Barnes still standing by the front door. The two officers pursued the fleeing robber, and were joined by Officer W.C. Robeen. Although the robber staggered as if wounded, he remained ahead of the officers and disappeared after entering an alley between Lee and White Avenues. When the three officers returned, they found Barnes still standing by the door. He had been wounded in the neck and was unable to speak. His gun was gone. He was taken to the East Side hospital, where he died fifteen minutes later.
Officer Barnes was a class B patrolman on the force since 1922, and worked out of the Sheffield station. Before joining the force, he had fought in World War I. He was twenty-eight years old.
