National Night Out Against Crime

More than 600 people are expected to attend NNI’s second annual National Night Out Against Crime Kick-Off July 29, 5 to 8 p.m. at Oak Grove Park, 76th and North Troost in Gladstone. The Kick-off is a preview of National Night Out Against Crime on August 1, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. The national event, now in its 23rd year, will involve more than 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. NNI’s Kick-Off includes law enforcement partners from the Kansas City, Liberty and Gladstone police departments, and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department.

The purpose of both the National Night Out and NNI’s kick-off is to:

·                     Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness

·                     Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts

·                     Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships

·                     Send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back

According to NNI’s Janet Shaffer, the first step in crime prevention is “getting to know your neighbors, so expect ample amounts of food, door prizes, crime prevention information, and just having a great time. Borrowing a theme from the National Night Out Project, we invite neighborhoods to join us in giving crime and drugs a going away party.”

NNI’s Kick-Off includes booths on identity theft and personal safety, the FBI’s exhibit on security and weapons of mass destruction, demonstrations on securing your home, DARE trucks, emergency response vehicles, the police show car, bomb and arson squad, and much more.

There will plenty of interest for kids, too, with Ident-A-Kid, clowns, McGruff, Pewie the Skunk, snow cones, popcorn, and cotton candy. Spray from a fire department pumper truck will keep the kids cool and happy. A lineup of skits and bands will entertain children of all ages.

This is an event that North Patrol Division is involved, it will be an opportunity to eat some free food and meet others who are working to keep their neighborhood safe. There will also be displays and safety demonstrations. I look forward to seeing you there.
