The mission of the Driver’s Training is to develop a foundation for drivers to make sound decisions and to ensure safe and effective vehicle operation under all conditions.

This foundation is based on each individual’s knowledge of their own skill sets and their understanding of the vehicle they operate.

This training takes place at the KCPD Regional Training Academy on a safe, closed/gated driving course using KCPD cars, where the conditions can be controlled and monitored.

Precision Driving 1:
Students are trained in basic slow speed vehicle placement (NEVO), basic skid control, and basic controlled braking. This one-day course includes classroom instruction, practical exercises and evaluation. At this level, the instruction will take place on the combined skills/training area of the facility. Course size limited to 6 – 10 students.  Cost for outside agencies is $100 per student.  If the agency would like to use their own department vehicle(s) for the training, the cost increases* to $125 per student. 

Precision Driving 2:
Students are trained in the core class of emergency response driving along with vehicle dynamics, advanced skid control, and advanced controlled braking, utilizing the full road course as well as intersection clearing. This course consists of two days of instruction, including classroom instruction, practical exercise and evaluation. Course size is limited based on vehicle availability.  Class size is 6 -10 students. The prerequisite for this course is completion of Precision Driving 1.  Cost for outside agencies is $200 per student.  If the agency would like to use their own department vehicle(s) for the training, the cost increases* to $225 per student.

Precision Driving 3:
Students will be trained in the core class of pursuit driving and night pursuit driving. In addition, students will be instructed in the areas of evasive driving, accident avoidance and general night driving. This course consists of one day of training, including classroom instruction, practical exercise and evaluation, including day and night-time hours. The prerequisite for this course is completion of Precision Driving 1 and 2. Class size is 6 -10 students. Cost for outside agencies is $150 per student.  If the agency would like to use their own department vehicle(s) for the training, the cost increases* to $175 per student. 

Precision Van (Patrol Wagon) Operations:
Students are trained in basic slow speed vehicle placement (NEVO), learning the four corners of the vehicle, turning pivot-points, overcoming blind-spots in a larger vehicle with low visibility and basic/advanced backing. This 4-hour course includes classroom instruction, practical exercises and evaluation. Course size is limited to van availability.  Cost for outside agencies is $50 per student. If the agency would like to use their own department vehicle(s) for the training, the cost increases* to $75 per student. 

 

*Cost increases for cars used that are not KCPD driving course cars. KCPD cars are set up with lights that activate when brakes are applied, are equipped with a KCPD car radio for communication and are serviced monthly for top performance.
