Newly appointed Police Commissioner sworn into Board

Publish Date 12/03/2019

A new member has been appointed to The Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners by Missouri Governor Mike Parson. Commissioner Cathy Dean was sworn in this morning at Kansas City Police Headquarters before a special setting of the Board of Police Commissioners. She is a long-time resident of Kansas City and had an extensive career working in the legal field in KC. Commissioner Dean has significant courtroom experience in both state and federal courts, dealing in cases ranging from anti-trust to product liability. From 1985 until her retirement in May 2013, she practiced at the Polsinelli Law Firm in Kansas City.

From May 1989 until October 1994, Commissioner Dean served the Board of Police Commissioners as Secretary/Attorney. This experience will prove invaluable to her service now as Commissioner.

Commissioner Dean is replacing Commissioner Leland Shurin, whose appointed term has come to an end. He has served on the board since July 24th, 2015.  In addition to serving as board member, Commissioner Shurin served one term as President of the Board.  He said this morning that his time serving as a police commissioner has been an exciting and great experience. He expressed awe and respect for the men and women, both sworn and non-sworn, for their service to the community that goes largely unpublicized and for selflessly putting themselves in the line of fire.

The Kansas City Missouri Police Department is thankful for the service and leadership of Commissioner Shurin and looks forward to working with Commissioner Dean.
