According to Missouri Statute, the Board of Police Commissioners has the
responsibility of providing police service to citizens of Kansas City, Missouri.
• With the exception of a period from 1933 to 1939, the Police Department has been
controlled by a Board of Police Commissioners since its 1874 inception.
• Board members are appointed by the Governor of Missouri and must be Kansas City
residents.
• Commissioners serve four-year terms.
• The fifth member of the Board is the Mayor of Kansas City, by virtue of elected office.
• The Secretary/Attorney is appointed by the Board.
