Savannah Inselman-Qarini hears it all.  The pleas for help, the frantic parent, the complaint about an illegally parked car.

When someone dials 911 in Kansas City, Inselman-Qarini, a call taker, is there. Thousands of times a year, going on six years, she has quickly gotten callers help or figured out what they need when sometimes they don’t know.

“Being there for the community and supporting them is rewarding,” Inselman-Qarini said. “Sometimes they don’t know what’s out there, so it’s nice to share the resources we have.”

To perform at a high level, she says call takers must listen well and pay attention. They must be patient and have a strong intuition. This combination of skills has helped Inselman-Qarini find success.

For example, helping to find children who go missing, especially those who may have a learning disability, is one of the things that Inselman-Qarini finds rewarding about her career. One call at a time, she is making a difference.

“We listen, we take care of them, and we help them however we can,” Inselman-Qarini said.
