Officer Lukas Hair serves from the heart each day. He just doesn’t know how he’ll help others until the moment arrives.

“My favorite part of this job, hands down, is that I come to work every single day, and I have zero clue what’s going to happen,” Hair explained. “It’s not coming unprepared. It’s coming to work and not knowing what calls come your way. You don’t get to decide that. The city decides.”

Getting to this point – serving at East Patrol – was also unexpected. Hair grew up in Kansas City with a family heavily involved in athletics. Hair thought athletics were his path too, until he took criminal justice classes at Benedictine College. The classes clicked, and Hair discovered his passion.

At East Patrol, Hair has served with the pride of being there for others. They include his fellow officers, including his partner Officer Jonathan Geiger.

“We’re best friends,” Hair pointed out. “I’d seen the movies and TV shows where two cops are best friends. That’s legitimately us. Our significant others are best friends now. It’s a blessing.”

One of the challenges police face everywhere is staffing. KCPD too. A shortage of officers means cops are quickly dispatched to the next call.

“The challenge is making sure you do everything right and knowing you can’t be everywhere at once, Hair said. “You’ve got to handle where you’re at, and get it done right. You have to make sure everyone’s getting the service they need.”

Soon, Hair will step into a new arena for the goodwill of others. Hair will box in this year’s Guns N Hoses event, a fundraiser placing officers, firefighters, and EMS workers in the ring. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund (SAFE) that provides immediate financial assistance to the families of fallen first responders.

Hair has wanted to participate since he heard about Guns N Hoses while in the police academy.

“All this goes to benefit families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty,” Hair said. “Your money is going to a good place. It’s going to help families.”
